Class 01: Welcome to BIOE Senior Design

This class was used to introduce not only the course, but also the game-based learning aspect of BIO4010.

Learning objectives and goals included:

  1. Evaluating personal and classmate goals for the course -> career goals, class goals
  2. Understanding this is a unique course and will be different than they are used to
  3. Understanding there is no one right answer
  4. Introducing the study and how it affects the course curriculum

Synthesis of student reflections: Students wrote about how they evaluated their personal goals and compared them with their classmates’ goals for the course Based on their responses, they understood from the course introduction and the game that this will be a different classroom experience than what they are used to so far in school. The third objective, understanding there is no one right answer, was not mentioned in their responses. However, students did state that they are looking forward to hearing other student's perspectives through the activities and see that communication regarding perspectives as an advantage of this classroom format.

"I think that having critical feed back from our instructors on the activities and designing our product will be very beneficial to our overall experience in the class."

"I don't think it will enhance my learning because there's always one or two students in a large group who lead it and don't listen to other student's ideas. You need smaller groups to get everyone's input."

"The activity based aspect will enhance my learning of the material because it will encourage me to really learn the material...instead of memorizing. In previous courses, it has been easy to learn passively. I think that the activities will keep me from getting complacent and will also make learning the material more enjoyable."

"I am a firm believer that actually performing what we are being taught will help with learning the concepts. It keeps the students more involved so they will pay attention more and won't be falling asleep during class."

"I believe the team-based, hands-on, approach will allow me to grasp concepts more easily and increase my creativity over time."
